University of Washington researchers have developed VueBuds, a prototype system that embeds tiny cameras into standard wireless earbuds, allowing users to ask an AI questions about what they are seeing. The system captures low‑resolution, black‑and‑white images, sends them via Bluetooth to a nearby device and delivers spoken AI responses within about one second, all while processing data locally to protect privacy.
By using extremely small, low‑power cameras angled slightly outward, the earbuds achieve a wide field of view without significant battery drain or obstruction from the user’s face. In user studies, VueBuds performed comparably to high‑resolution smart glasses, with participants preferring VueBuds for translation tasks. The team plans to explore adding color capabilities and expanding use cases such as assisting people with low vision or supporting real‑time translation for travelers.
