University of Washington professor Emily Tseng’s lab has been selected to participate in Microsoft’s new AI safety initiative, receiving $25,000 in unrestricted funds.
Challenges presented by today’s most advanced AI systems require collaboration across companies, regions and areas of expertise to address safety and misuse risks. Microsoft’s External Red Team Alliance (EXTRA) initiative hopes to strengthen collaboration between industry and universities while still giving researchers the opportunity to pursue independent work. Tseng’s work centers on digital safety and how technologies become part of people’s relationships and everyday lives, with a focus on designing systems that better anticipate misuse and support trust.
Tseng’s Sociotechnical Safety Lab is one of 18 university research groups worldwide selected for the initiative.
