Researchers from the University of Washington, Cleveland Clinic and IBM have developed an AI model that uses routine sleep study data to identify patients at higher risk for heart disease, cognitive decline and death.
Published in Nature Communications, the study found that patients in the highest-risk group had twice the five-year mortality risk of those in the lowest-risk group. The model uncovered clinically meaningful patterns missed by traditional sleep apnea measures and was validated in an independent nationwide patient cohort.
Researchers say the technology could enable more personalized care and expand the value of routine sleep studies as tools for predicting future health outcomes.
