UW study shows AI can learn cultural values through observation

Image of a game controllerAI systems often struggle with cultural differences because they absorb values from broad internet data.

A new University of Washington study shows that AI can learn culture-specific values by observing human behavior, using a method called inverse reinforcement learning.

In experiments, AI agents trained on Latino participants’ gameplay learned more altruistic behaviors than those trained on white participants, and applied these values in new scenarios, suggesting a path toward culturally attuned AI.
