UW researcher utilizes AI to realize advances in hearing science

A hearing aid pictured in a man's earWhile hearing loss remains a universal challenge of aging, The University of Washington’s Dr. Yi Shen is harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to create personalized solutions that work better than ever before. Shen, an assistant professor at the UW’s Department of Speech & Hearing Sciences, is leading several research initiatives that utilize artificial intelligence to help people experiencing hearing difficulties.

Working out of the Applied Hearing Science Lab, Shen’s team is developing apps that allow users to train hearing devices through simple interactions, rather than technical adjustments. For a separate project, Shen’s team is collaborating with Seattle Children’s Hospital to create AI tools that help audiologists diagnose hearing issues in babies more accurately. His team also is working in collaboration with the UW Department of Otolaryngology to help improve cochlear implant adjustment through using AI to give patients a better feedback system.
