Noah Smith, a professor in the Allen School and senior director of Natural Language Processing research at the Allen Institute for AI, was appointed as the University of Washington’s first vice provost and endowed chair for artificial intelligence on November 1, 2025.

AI@UW Internal Advisory Committee

AI@UW aims to position the University of Washington as a national leader in demonstrating how universities can responsibly and creatively adapt to the age of AI across education, research, and governance.

To support that positioning, AI@UW is forming an internal Advisory Committee that will include UW faculty member, administrators and staff with relevant expertise and perspectives. The committee will support the Vice Provost for AI by:

  • Offering guidance on priorities, emerging opportunities and engagement across the UW
  • Sourcing speakers, both internal and external, for events on campus
  • Evaluating project proposals submitted to AI@UW
  • Supporting engagement efforts across campus
  • Meeting monthly to review progress and advise on strategy for the programs

Additionally, committee members may lead or sponsor working groups focused on specific thematic areas as needed. Salary support may be available for those assuming significant leadership roles. The committee will be publicly identified.

Terms are for two years and are renewable. Self-nominations are welcome. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis.
