AI technologies have the potential to greatly benefit people, society and the world. AI technologies can, however, also result in harm and/or violations of human rights. It is therefore imperative for UW’s AI efforts to protect privacy and to be designed responsibly and ethically. The resulting AI technologies must be accessible to all, and comply with relevant rules and regulations (e.g., HIPAA in a medical context, FERPA in an educational context).
The UW is currently relying on governance and policy frameworks such as the following to maintain ethical standards, data privacy and security to reduce individual decision making and expertise required to make technical decisions:
UW IT Guidelines

Key considerations from UW IT for the responsible security and privacy use of generative AI at the UW.
UW Medicine Guidance

Guidance from UW Medicine regarding how generative AI, including LLMs, may or may not be used.
